Rex Prescott Walden has covet looked outside his Guilford home, across the broad, blue-fresh expanse of the Long Island Sound, for artistic inspiration.

But for the travail in his upcoming solo show, Walden set his sights further afield, to the cascading cliffs, sea-suds shores and golden-cobbled streets of Italy's grandest cities.

The demonstration, "To Italy," opens at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery in Stamford on Feb. 3 and runs through Walk 11.

One of the downtown gallery's best-selling contemporary artists, Walden fashions unapplied collage art from nautical charts and maps, acrylic paints and found objects, such as pieces of driftwood, typewriter keys and square yardage tools.

In "To Italy," he evokes not only the beauty of the Italian landscape, but the nation's savoury maritime history.

"Each part of the country, from the northern lakes all the way down to Mt. Etna, gives me a new way to look at what I'm painting," said Walden, who makes annual trips to Italy with his strife, Wendy. "I decided to look for maps and charts that talk about the Italian scene and the mystery behind it.
